What is the difference between coconut milk and coconut water?
Coconut water is contained inside every unripe, green coconut. The riper the coconut becomes, the less water it contains, as the flesh of the fruit absorbs the water. A very ripe, brown coconut, for example, contains hardly any water at all, but all the more flesh, which can then be processed into coconut milk, among other things. The pulp is crushed and pressed to obtain the viscous (and greasy) coconut milk.

A young coconut contains between 0.6 and one liter of coconut water. On the beach you can enjoy the water directly from the coconut with a straw. On some islands the coconut water is used as a substitute for clean drinking water due to water shortage. Since the coconut trend the water is now also available here – but mostly in (rather unexotic) Tetrapak. It tastes good anyway! But make sure that no additives are in it.
Why is coconut water healthy?
Coconut water is one of the most valuable natural foods. It provides you not only with liquid, but also with many minerals, vitamins and trace elements. With approximately 20 calories per 100 millilitres, it also has fewer calories than fruit juices or soft drinks, for example. However, you should not underestimate the carbohydrate or sugar content of a good 4 grams per 100 millilitres – especially if you eat low-carb food.

Calcium also plays an important role in the work of muscles, but is also used for bone formation and many other metabolic processes in the body. Magnesium is known to prevent muscle cramps, but also activates the energy in the cells – the ATP (adenosine triphosphate). Through the cleavage of the ATP the body gains energy.

You danced through the night, your head is still spinning and your stomach is rebelling? The nutrient-rich coconut water will get you back on track. Where can you buy coconut water?
You can now buy coconut water in most organic shops, Asian shops and health food stores. However, due to the long transport routes, coconut water is not a bargain. Coconut water has a large ecological footprint. After all, coconuts only grow in distant regions and have to be transported to us first. If you want to do something good for the environment, you unfortunately have to do without the drink.
Instead, you can use regional fruits and vegetables – they contain just as many nutrients but taste different.
