There are beauty products that you simply read and hear about all the time – without knowing what is actually behind them and why you should use them at all. Right at the top of the beauty mysteries: Primer. No more riddles! Here you can find out what many make-up professionals’ favourite product is all about.
What exactly is a primer?
He’s practically the Facetune of real life! “A primer is a make-up base that you apply after the day cream and before the foundation. The purpose of a primer is to smooth the skin surface like a soft-focus filter,” explains Mareen Wendland, beauty expert at Cosnova. For the perfect blurring effect, the product levels out large pores and slight wrinkles, filling them up. Sounds a bit like filling up, but it doesn’t feel like it.
Because the skin is completely even after application, you can a) apply your make-up better and b) enjoy it for longer. Because the foundation that is applied afterwards can no longer settle so easily in wrinkles and pores and lasts much better, even if you start sweating.
By the way: There are even primers especially for eyeshadow – also known as eye shadow base – and for lipstick. This means that extreme nuances in particular last much, much better. You don’t necessarily need the specialists for a normal day make-up.
How do I use a primer?
Allow your serums and face cream to absorb completely (!) and only then apply the primer. How? Like this: “Personally, I think that it works best with your fingers, but if you want, you can of course also use a make-up sponge or brush,” says Mareen Wendland. After a short application time, you can apply the foundation as usual – just much, much easier.
Which primer suits my skin?
“Before you buy, ask yourself exactly what you expect from the product,” advises Mareen Wendland and adds: “For example, would you like an extra portion of Glow or would you prefer a matte finish? Is it about moisturising the skin or protecting it from the sun with a sun protection factor? Would you like to conceal redness or simply visually reduce the size of your pores? There are perfect primers for all of these.
Meanwhile there are even tinted variants. If you don’t want to conceal much, you can even save on make-up afterwards.
You can order the Catrice bestseller now at amazon.de. Alternatively there is the Maybelline-Primer, which optically reduces the pores. Beside this there is also from NYX a pore-refining primer. And many more!

Where does the primer go?
Ideally the whole face. You probably apply your foundation all over your face. “But if you only want to partially counteract problem areas, for example by providing extra moisture to dry areas, concealing areas with larger pores or minimizing unwanted skin shine, you can also do this partially – and thus apply different products to different zones,” explains the expert. This type of application is perfect for combination skin with an oily T-zone and dry cheeks.

Does a primer harm the skin when used daily?
As a general rule: make-up only really does harm if you do not remove it. So in the evening always, really always conscientiously remove make-up.
Nevertheless, it can be read constantly that primers can clog the pores in the long run and lead to pimples. “A beauty myth,” says Mareen Wendland. “This prejudice comes mainly from primers that contain many low-quality silicones. These cheap silicones can actually clog the pores, but this does not apply to all skin types.
And: good products come with high-quality silicone or even silicone-free. In addition, according to the beauty expert, it can of course always happen that the skin reacts sensitively to certain ingredients.
