We would like to draw attention to a social minority here. In German bedrooms, the group of nude sleepers* is clearly in the minority: only 10 percent of Germans sleep naked. The majority belongs to the pyjama faction. We want to get involved in this unequal competition, because we think There is hardly a more beautiful feeling than to feel freshly washed, fragrant bed linen all over your skin. And: sleeping naked is very healthy.
That’s why we asked sleep researcher and book author Dr. Hans Günter Weeß (Sleep works wonders – everything about the most important third of life) why you should at least once try to sleep naked. He gave us 6 reasons.
Why should I sleep naked?
1. sleeping naked is healthy and hygienic
Female nude sleepers can enjoy the freedom of lying in bed without any clothes on and without any constraints. The fact is: “Sleeping naked can have a benefit for the skin,” says the expert. Nude sleepers sweat less at night than pyjama wearers, especially in the intimate areas of the body. This deprives them of the breeding ground for dangerous bacteria and fungi.
The pyjama group, on the other hand, argues that it is unhygienic to sleep without textiles. Yes and no. Sleeping naked is more hygienic under one condition: if you wash your bed linen more often. Weeß therefore stresses: “If you sleep naked, you should change your bed linen at least twice a week. At night you sweat and lose up to ¾ litres of fluid. This collects naturally in the bedding when you sleep without covers.”
This is what your dreams really mean
2. nude sleepers have a happier relationship
A further argument for going to bed in an Adams or evacuation costume “If you sleep naked, you feel sexy”, emphasizes the sleep researcher. The fact that couples lie in bed as God created them can increase the libido. When two people lie next to each other in such an exposed position, the chance of physical contact between them is increased. It also increases the chance of sex.

Furthermore, the relationship with your partner can be intensified through intimacy and mutual contact. Let’s face it: The probability for erotic moments is higher when your partner is naked than when he lies next to you in his bear pajamas, isn’t it? The reverse is also true.
3. sleeping naked reduces stress and makes you happy
It does not always have to be sex: “When people touch each other, the binding hormone oxytocin is released,” emphasizes Weeß. This causes both of them to relax. “By releasing oxytocin, the formation of the stress hormone cortisol is minimized. This ensures that both partners calm down,” explains the expert.
But not only that: Your immune system is strengthened by the binding hormone oxytocin. The blood pressure slows down and even depressive moods can be prevented by the cuddling hormone. Don’t you think so? Try it out! Provided, of course, that you find each other attractive. If two people who do not like each other lie next to each other, the oxytocin will also be absent.

4. sleeping naked can have a rejuvenating effect
Granted, you will not become Sleeping Beauty and wake up young and fresh again after 100 years. But: a study by Stanford University, which examined the sleeping behaviour of athletes in relation to their sporting performance, concluded that sleeping naked can have a rejuvenating effect.
Researchers attributed this to the increased release of the sleep hormone melatonin. Because: Melatonin acts anticarcinogenic, i.e. against cancer formation. It fights free radicals, i.e. substances that attack your body cells and promote cell aging. Free radicals are caused by environmental influences, such as UV -radiation, but also nicotine and alcohol. Melatonin acts as an antioxidant, i.e. radical scavenger, binds radicals to itself and transports them out of the body.
However, our expert adds: “Melatonin is primarily formed by darkness. If you sleep naked, however, this can additionally increase the anti-aging effect. However, the rejuvenating effect can only take effect if your ambient temperature is below 21 degrees.”

5. sleeping naked is good for the figure
Sleeping naked not only ensures hot nights with your partner. Your metabolism is also heated up. While you sleep, you consume almost as many calories as when you are awake. “If you drift off into the realm of dreams, the lights in your brain will not go out. On the contrary: while you sleep, you only consume about the same amount of calories as a slice of bread less than when you are awake,” says the expert. If you also sleep naked, the calorie consumption can increase.
Provided you are uncovered, or the ambient temperature is less than 21 degrees. The reason is plausible. If you are cold, the body makes more effort to maintain its core temperature and adapt to the ambient temperature.

6. sleeping naked reduces body odors
“If you sleep in your pyjamas, body fluids such as sweat stay on the skin longer and collect in your skin folds. Then moisture tends to collect in the genital area,” explains Weeß. That’s why you are more likely to smell unpleasant in pyjamas than naked. But going to bed without covers is of course no substitute for taking a shower the night before or the next morning.

What do I have to consider when I sleep naked?
As I said, the ambient temperature is important. Your bedroom should have a temperature of 16-21 degrees. Then you can sleep naked without a guilty conscience. But listen to your body. If you freeze at night, you better cover up or you might catch a cold. The blanket should be made of a material that is not too insulating, so that you do not sweat under it. A light down duvet is advisable.
Depending on your room situation or furnishings, you should cover the windows well so that no peeping Tom is watching you.
What are the requirements for healthy sleep?
1. stay awake long enough
Simple but logical. According to the expert, it is important for a good sleep to have been awake long enough. Only if you stay awake long enough is another messenger substance, adenosine, produced. This acts like a kind of sandman for your brain and you get tired.
2. provide for darkness
In the evening you should provide for darkness, since humans are day-active beings. Only in the dark does the above-mentioned messenger substance melatonin, which is important for a good night’s sleep, form. This also causes you to feel sleepy.
3. relax properly
The be-all and end-all for a good night’s sleep: stay calm. You should feel safe and secure and switch off in your thoughts. This is how you roll out the red carpet for a good night’s sleep. “If you don’t manage to stop the carousel of thoughts in the evening, you are tense and tension is the enemy of sleep,” says Weeß.
Tip: Do not presume to fall asleep. This also leads to tension. And that’s the enemy of any good sleep- whether naked or dressed.
